What is a D.O.?

D.O. Stands for Doctor of Osteopathy. Osteopathic medicine is a holistic approach to medicine which was originally established in America over 100 years ago. The philosophy behind osteopathic medicine focuses on looking at the whole person and how illness is one specific area can affect the entire patient. Osteopathic medical training is very similar to the training at MD (allopathic) medical schools. Osteopathic physicians are licensed by all 50 states and can practice any medical specialty. Osteopathic physicians receive additional training in manipulative techniques to assess and treat muscle and skeletal complaints. Osteopathic techniques can also be used at times to supplement traditional Western medial treatments. There are over a dozen osteopathic medical schools in the U.S. Josephine County has a large number of osteopathic physicians in specialties including pediatrics, family practice, internal medicine and emergency medicine.
